Noel Gallagher: 'Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' was free marketing'

Oasis legend still praises Thom Yorke and co

Oasis' Noel Gallagher has said that he thinks that Radiohead's 'pay-what-you-like' method of releasing recent album 'In Rainbows' was a "free marketing" ploy.

He told BBC 6music that his own band would not be following in the footsteps of Thom Yorke and co by letting fans choose how much to pay for their forthcoming new album, 'Dig Out Your Soul'.

"That's not our bag," he said. "I didn't spend a year in the most expensive studio in England, with the most expensive producer in America, and the most expensive graphic designer in London to then give it away. Fuck that."

Speaking about Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' release, Gallagher said, "To be honest, to me it looked like marketing – a great way of getting a load of marketing for free really. But good for them. That's what they do, they're rebels and outsiders."

'Dig Out Your Soul' is released on October 6.

Shame to hear that Noel is so skint AND out of touch. Whatever happened to forward thinking? If he wants to stay stuck in last century then that's his problem. It's this kind of thinking which represents the die hards of the old music industry and the capitalistic ideas they represent. Maybe he should stick to what he's good at and build up his Status Quo circuit for the future (now?) and count his millions!

'Capitalistic ideas'!? You can rest assured that no one in this industry is doing it just for the love of music. Making money is the bottom line for everyone, including Radiohead. Fact.

So in other words, he had a no expense spared sheikh-over to make this album, so it MUST be good (right), it's the best thing money can buy... When did they become a sold-out artist?

It doesn't matter what Radiohead "said" a few months ago; You have to be naive to think they are not shrewd businessmen and you can't take what they say at face value. I don't see how that makes Noel an asshole; Sure, he doesn't have any new ideas. Not many people do these days when it comes to the industry..so it's just his opinion on the matter, which I tend to think is not far from the truth considering that Radiohead re-released the album in a traditional CD format. So what happens to everybody that did pay for those shitty mp3's? Sounds like a capitalist swindle to me...which leads to my final point: PBR_Streetgang, I have a question for you: Do you live in Venezuela? Perhaps China? Maybe, Cuba? no? ...none of the above? ok...then you should probably shut the Fuck up with your load of bollocks and be grateful for the opportunities you have thanks to Capitalism. It's far from perfect, but it's the best we've done so far.

Radiohead explained this months ago!Just because they're slightly more innovative, some people don't understand. It's sad that Noel is one of those people. Radiohead are always better than Oasis anyway. x

If you went for the lower end of the studio/producer/graphic designer spectrum, people might think that you're actually still giving a fuck Noel.I'm officially opening a book on when he says this album is the best since 'Definitely Maybe'...

Let's hope England's most expensive studio, America's most expensive producer and the most expensive graphic designer in London result in something more than the world's most disappointing album eh Noel?

"most expensive studio in England", "most expensive producer in America", "most expensive graphic designer in London" - I take it we're still gonna get an album of third-rate pub rock. Oh well.

Wow...alot of Oasis haters here. As an avid Oasis fan, I am not blinded enough to admit that outside of DBTT, the middle three or four albums were poor. However, to slag him off as being third rate pub rock is a little unfair. Yes, it was over ten years ago but they played Knebworth. Has Radiohead done that? They sold out MSG here in less than two hours and that was 2005. Is that third rate pub rock? Oasis aren't reinventing the wheel but at least they're honest. Radiohead is the typical liberal, "I'm gooing to save the world with my music" moronic gobshite. They are REM with a different accent.

Miley Cyrus has sold out bigger venues than Oasis. And your point is what exactly?I don't think Radiohead are going to save anything but their own bank balances. They still put out far more interesting and risky music than Oasis ever will. Club all the best bits of Oasis' career together and you've got an amazing album, but the filler in between shits all over their legacy.
