Biography

b. Randolph Peter Best, 24 November 1941, Madras, India. A founder member of the Beatles, the luckless drummer was fired from the band on 16 August 1962, prior to their official recording debut. He then joined Lee Curtis And The All-Stars, a unit that became the Pete Best All-Stars on its erstwhile leader's departure. The artist enjoyed a temporary notoriety in the wake of the Beatles' success and his band, now known as the Pete Best Four, secured a contract with Decca Records. A perfunctory reading of "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" was the act's sole British release on Decca Records, but they pursued a career in the USA and Canada under various guises, including the Pete Best Combo and Best Of The Beatles. Singles appeared on a variety of often-dubious outlets, the most opportunistic of which was their reading of "This Boy", a song associated with Ringo Starr. Many of these recordings were collected on a subsequent album, Best Of The Beatles. This somewhat tawdry affair ended, against the odds, in 1966 with the excellent "Carousel Of Love'. The band was then dissolved, but although former members Tony Waddington and Wayne Bickerton achieved success in the 70s with their work for the Rubettes and Flirtations, Best was unable to pursue a full-time career in music, although rumours persisted of a new band being formed. As a result of the Beatles" Anthology series, the first CD of which was issued in 1995, Best earned several million pounds in royalties, as a number of early tracks featured him on drums: a highly satisfactory redundancy payment 30 years on.
