Biography

b. Nicholas Berkeley Mason, 27 January 1944, Downshire Hill, Birmingham, England. It was while studying architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic that drummer Mason first began playing with future Pink Floyd bandmates Roger Waters and Rick Wright in Sigma 6. They were joined by Syd Barrett in a new outfit, the (Screaming) Abdabs, and after the latter fell apart at the end of 1965 reconvened as the Pink Floyd. Sixteen years later, Mason was the last member of this legendary rock band to issue a solo album, Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports, a collection that bore the indelible jazz pop mark of its pianist and composer, Carla Bley. Other contributors included Robert Wyatt, Chris Spedding and Bley's husband, Michael Mantler. Records, however, were of less importance to Mason than Formula 1 racing and vintage cars. These interests infiltrated 1985's Profiles, on which Mason was co-credited with Rick Fenn (ex-10cc). Tracks from the album also featured in Life Could Be A Dream, a half-hour film documentary (directed by Mike Shackleton) about Mason's pastimes. The founders of Bamboo Music, Fenn and Mason also scored Donald Cammell's White Of The Eye as well as advertising jingles for Barclays Bank and the HMV record shop chain. As a producer, Mason has ministered to albums by Gong, Steve Hillage and the Damned.
