b. 26 May 1945, Hull, Yorkshire, England, d. 30 April 1993. This UK guitarist, was originally a member of David Bowie's backing group Hype, in February 1970. Bowie later renamed the group, the Spiders From Mars and achieved international success, with Ronson playing lead on the pivotal albums, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars and Aladdin Sane. Ronson embarked on a short-lived and unsuccessful solo career towards the end of 1973, initiated by Bowie's decision to quit touring at the time. Recording two competent rock albums, he found it difficult to accept the lack of success as a solo artist and joined Mott The Hoople in 1974. They only recorded the single "Saturday Gigs" with Ronson, before a major personnel change ensued. Lead vocalist, Ian Hunter, departed to start a solo career and Ronson followed. He subsequently appeared with Bob Dylan in the famous Rolling Thunder Revue. The remaining members shortened the name to Mott and recruited new members. The Hunter-Ronson partnership lasted over 15 years, but it was only on YUI Orta, that Ronson received equal billing on the sleeve with Hunter. In 1991, Ronson underwent treatment for cancer, and the following year he appeared with Bowie at the Freddie Mercury Aids Benefit concert. Just before Ronson's death in 1993 he was working on his third album with contributions from artists such as Chrissie Hynde, John Mellencamp, Joe Elliott and David Bowie.
