Biography

From the defunct Liverpool, England-based band the Merseybeats, Tony Crane (b. 17 April 1945, Liverpool, England; vocals/lead guitar) and Billy Kinsley (b. 28 May 1946, Liverpool, England; vocals/bass) emerged as the Merseys. For their backing group they employed Liverpool hopefuls, the Fruit Eating Bears. With manager Kit Lambert encouraging a fresh direction, the duo covered an old McCoys b-side, "Sorrow", which climbed to number 4 in the UK charts in 1966. Lambert next invited Pete Townshend to compose a follow-up, "So Sad About Us", but despite some good reviews, it failed to chart. Further attempts with "Rhythm Of Love" and "The Cat' brought no success and the duo reluctantly moved into cabaret, employing various additional musicians under their old name, the Merseybeats. Kinsley later re-emerged as a hit artist in the 70s, leading Liverpool Express. A small footnote was added to the Merseys" career when their first two singles were belatedly covered by David Bowie and the Jam, respectively.
