Biography

b. Jeffrey Isbell, 8 April 1962, Lafayette, Indiana, USA. Tired of the pressures of working with one of the world's high-profile acts, Stradlin left Guns N'Roses in the autumn of 1991 to work on a solo project. With himself on guitar and lead vocals, and the former Burning Tree rhythm section of Mark Dutton and Doni Grey, Stradlin added a Ju Ju Hounds line-up of former Georgia Satellites guitarist Rick Richards, ex-Broken Homes bass player Jimmy Ashhurst, and drummer Charlie Quintana, for the band's 1992 recording debut. Axl Rose's description of the band as "Izzy's Keith Richard thing' was apt, as the influence of the Rolling Stones guitarist on Stradlin's songwriting and vocal style was obvious, even incorporating their shared taste for reggae with a furious cover of Toots And the Maytals' "Pressure Drop". However, far from being a mere homage, the album was excellent, and generally well-received. Subsequent live shows were electric affairs, with Stradlin appearing more relaxed, and Richards, in particular, contributing some stunning slide/lead guitar work, and vocals. Somewhat surprisingly, Stradlin made a brief return to the Guns N'Roses camp for some open-air European shows in the summer of 1993, ironically standing in for his replacement, Gilby Clarke, after the latter broke his wrist.
