Biography

b. c.1940. Having embarked on a short-lived singing career releasing singles on Pye and Immediate in the 60s, Johns began a concurrent path as an engineer. He assisted Shel Talmy on several sessions before establishing his name as a producer through an association with the Steve Miller Band. Their fruitful partnership resulted in four exceptional albums (including Sailor)which showcased a crafted, timeless sound, which complemented Miller's innovative ideas. Johns was also involved in the recording of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Let It Be, while Led Zeppelin, Joe Cocker and Traffic also called on his talents. Post-production work on the Rolling Stones' Get Yer Ya Yas Out collection resulted in further collaborations with the group on Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street and Black And Blue. During the 70s Johns achieved due respect with his productions for the Who, the Faces, Eric Clapton and Joan Armatrading. His connection with the Eagles, which spanned the group's first three albums, was fundamental in establishing this highly-successful country-rock group's sound and style. Johns' frantic schedule lessened during the succeeding decade as he embarked on a lower-key approach with newer acts, including Nine Below Zero, Live Wire and, more recently, Helen Watson. Johns' work is now largely determined by artists he respects. In 1992 he was working with David Crosby at his studio in Sussex, England.
