CSS Biography

This highly entertaining Brazilian indie electro band was formed at the end of 2003 by Lovefoxxx (b. Luísa Hanaê Matsushita, 25 February 1984, Campinas, Brazil; vocals), Ana Rezende (b. Ana Maria de Rezende Versiani dos Anjos, 19 March 1983, São Paulo, Brazil; guitar), Luiza Sá (b. Luiz da Silva E Sá, 29 March 1983, São Paulo, Brazil; guitar/drums), Carolina Parra (b. 16 November 1978, São Paulo, Brazil; guitar/drums), Adriano Ferreira Cintra (b. 21 May 1972, São Paulo, Brazil; drums), and Iracema Trevisan (b. 28 August 1981, Poçis de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brazil; bass). The band's full name is Cansei De Ser Sexy, which translates as "tired of being sexy' in the members" native Portuguese. The line, which is attributed to the highly successful R&B diva Beyoncé, was adopted as the band's name in a reaction against the singer's flippant remark.

The rise of CSS can be attributed to their prominent Internet presence, with the Trama Virtual website leading the way in promoting the band's music to a worldwide audience. Their early releases, including the single "Ódio Ódio Ódio, Sorry C.", were endearingly amateurish, hardly surprising as the majority of the members could not play an instrument when the band was formed. They released two independent EPs in 2004, before signing a contract with the Trama Virtual label the following year. Their debut album, released at the end of 2005, featured a relentlessly upbeat collection of indie dance tracks with self-referencing pop art titles such as "Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above", "Fuck Off Is Not The Only Thing You Have To Show" and "Meeting Paris Hilton". A limited edition version of the album included a free CD-R to enable the listener to burn a copy of the album to pass on to their friends, a ploy that cemented the band's thoroughly contemporary stance on music distribution.

CSS signed with the respected US "independent" label Sub Pop Records in 2006. Their debut album was re-released the same year, with the Portuguese language tracks mysteriously dropped from the tracklisting.
